Modern Art Design From Mofasis (Interior Design Ideas)

A sprawling good class bungalow in the heart of Singapore was to become the new home of an expatriate family, whose interests surround fine art and philanthropy, among other things. Relocating to Singapore from Europe was no small task, and the interior designer’s main objective was to furnish the client’s new home into move-in condition and in line with the client’s lifestyle.

Achieving a modern and warm art deco ambience formed the design direction. The canvas is a conservation colonial house for the family, coupled with a contemporary rear extension wing for the nanny, helper and house guests. The rear wing also houses a converted gym that opens up to the pool, and the pool is accessible via a sheltered patio that sits between the colonial house and the rear wing.

Finely crafted imported furniture is highly preferred, and the resultant décor should complement the client’s art collection that includes works by Anish Kapoor and Marc Chagall. Furniture selection was the crux of this project, yet it presented the largest challenge due to time constraints. Artisanal furniture can be brought in from Europe over an average period of 4 months. A timeframe of 10 weeks however, rendered most European furniture inaccessible, and limited the designer to only ex-stock items that are already in Singapore.

Countless hours were spent combing through furniture showrooms across the island to curate pieces that could satisfy both the demanding designer and a highly discerning client. Incompatible materials and the occasional less-than-desirable conditions of showroom items further diminished the already small selection pool. After a painstaking search, an ensemble of fine European pieces was carefully brought together and complemented with items imported from nearby countries such as Japan and Indonesia, all in time to welcome the client’s arrival to Singapore and their newly furnished residence.

Main furniture items feature creations from Giorgetti, Flexform, BD Barcelona, Vitra, Maruni, Dedon and Rausch. Accessories and white goods include collections from Flos, Artemide, Fiam, Kartell, Serralunga, Bella Luna and Zikmu, to name a few. Rare items include a refurbished 20-year-old Ibach grand piano that is no longer in production, and a 400kg dining table that had to be crane-lifted up to the home. The dining tabletop was made of a single solid wood (merbau) slab measuring a majestic 4.0 by 1.2 metres. Due to its sheer size and the unusually straight edges, this merbau slab is virtually second to none, as befits the unique setting of the cross-cultural interior décor.
